Sigmar  Gabriel - Biography

Sigmar Gabriel is one of Germany’s most prominent political figures. As a former Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vice Chancellor, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Federal Minister for the Environment, SPD Chairman, and Minister-President of Lower Saxony, he has decades of experience at the key intersections of politics, business, diplomacy, and society.

Today, Sigmar Gabriel works as a columnist, consultant, and speaker. Since 2019, he has served as Chairman of Atlantik-Brücke e.V. In addition, he is active in international networks and committees, including the Trilateral Commission, the European Council on Foreign Relations, and the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group. Since July 2022, he has been an honorary professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.

Born in Goslar in 1959, Sigmar Gabriel studied German language and literature, politics, and sociology at the University of Göttingen. In 1987, he passed the first state examination to become a high school teacher, followed by the second state examination in 1989. From 1981 to 1990, he worked in adult vocational education.

Sigmar Gabriel became politically active at an early age. From 1976 to 1989, he volunteered with the SPD-affiliated youth organization “Socialist Youth of Germany – The Falcons,” and in 1977 he joined the SPD. From 1987 to 1998, he served as a member of the Goslar County Council; from 1991 to 1999, as a member of the Goslar City Council; and from 1990 to 2005, as a member of the Lower Saxony State Parliament. There, he assumed leading roles within the SPD parliamentary group, including serving as its chairman.

From 1999 to 2003, Sigmar Gabriel served as Minister-President of Lower Saxony. In 2005, he moved into federal politics and served in the German Bundestag until November 2019. In Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet, he served as Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety from 2005 to 2009. From 2009 to 2017, he led the SPD as federal chairman. From 2013 to 2017, he served as Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, and from 2013 to 2018 as Vice Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. He then served as Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2018.

Since leaving active politics, Sigmar Gabriel has remained active in business, academia, and international institutions. Since 2019, he has served as Chairman of Atlantik-Brücke e.V. and as a Senior Advisor at the Eurasia Group. He has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bank AG since 2020. He is also a member of the Supervisory Board of Siemens Energy AG. From April 2022 to August 2024, he served as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG. Since May 2025, Sigmar Gabriel has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Rheinmetall AG.
